Our understanding of the human psyche has grown and it is now common knowledge that there are multiple intelligences which must be developed holistically for all round development of the child. At Vighnan Jyoti Pre-primary School we chose and prepared a curriculum with integrated syllabus to meet the need of our precious little ones.

Given below is a brief description of how we develop multiple intelligences in the child.

Kinesthetic skills – This is the capacity of the child to manipulate objects and use a variety of physical skills. This involves physical co-ordination and deftness, using gross and fine motor skills to learn through physical activities and also to express oneself.

Some activities that we teach children are:

  • Matching
  • Sorting
  • Folding
  • Holding
  • Balancing
  • Pouring
  • Buttoning
  • Beading
  • Planting
  • Games like running, hopping, jumping, slide, sand pit etc

Logical intelligence – This is the ability to quantify, calculate and carry out mathematical operations. Understanding patterns, categories and relationships helps the child to develop sequential reasoning.

Some activities included are:

  • Puzzles
  • Sorting and matching
  • Patterning and sequencing
  • Art and craft
  • Beading and threading

Naturalistic intelligence – This is a lifelong process of learning how to integrate all spheres of life in a balanced manner. Various activities are employed to create and develop in the child a sense of healthy curiosity in the world and a desire to explore in order to learn. This learning further seeks to contribute to maintaining a healthy ecological balance in all areas of life.

 Some activities included are:

  • Nature walk
  • Organic Field trips
  • Creative story telling

Linguistic skills – After kinesthetic skills, this is the most important skill to master. Language is the means of communication and every child is encouraged to explore their interest in at least 3 languages – English, Telugu and Hindi. Rhymes and stories are the prime vehicle for enhancing linguistic skills while Picture books and short stories for pre-schoolers are secondary means.

 Some activities included are:

  • Show and tell
  • Circle time
  • Rhymes
  • Story telling
  • Picture reading

  • Writing
  •

Creative intelligence – This involves helping the child focus on different means of communication of ideas and feelings. Song and music, dance and drama provide them ample opportunity to explore their innate talent and develop / hone their skills.

Visual / Spatial intelligence

This involves visual observation and awareness of the environment, the ability to imagine and manipulate mental images etc. Capacity for mental imagery, spatial reasoning and communication onto medium is encouraged and taught.

Some activities included are:

  • Colouring
  • Drawing
  • Field trips
  • Nature walk
